Prison of Dendermonde

The prison of Dendermonde, also known as Poort van Dendermonde, is an impressive star shaped complex that houses 444 male prisoners and provides for a sustainable, modern and humane detention.

In the middle of the prison, 4 wings with cells for prisoners are provided which were brought together around one central supervisory point (panopticon). Their specific shape creates atria, which create central spaces. They were built along the side of the central surveillance core, so that the guards have a good view of the cell doors. The four wings are connected by corridors with glass parapets to allow outside light to enter the space. Starconstruct did the installation of all the glass parapets.
