Railway station Mechelen

Fased approach

Just like the Ghent railway station did, also the railway station of the city of Mechelen can use a proper facelift. The project comprises the entire renovation of the platforms, inclusive of a new railway station canopy and glass façade. Works on this railway station have started in 2018, and will only be completed in a couple of years from now. One has to consider that the work has to be done in different phases, because only two tracks can be taken out of service at the same moment. A first phase comprises the completion of two additional tracks (track 11 and 12) for the high speed train. A phased working method in a railway station environment, Starconstruct knows all about that.

Work in progress

After the railway station of Ghent Sint Pieters, Starconstruct can take on a new exciting railway project together with the main contractor CIT Blaton. Starconstruct will be responsible for the engineering, supply and installation of all glass structures in this project. At this moment, the project is in full installation phase, but due to the unfortunate and exceptional corona-crisis, the project site has temporarily been shut down. Here we give you an overview of the different stages the project has already gone through up to now:

  • 2019 : A full year of study work and preparation to achieve a smooth progress on site
  • January 2020 : Installation of the walkable glass of the platforms of track 11 and 12
  • February 2020 : Installation of the substructure for the glass cladding with wit ceramic printed glass panels with invisible mechanical fixing
  • March 2020 : Start of the installation of 280 meters of glass windscreens along the platform of track 12, sadly temporarily on hold due to the corona-measures

After the corona-measures

Since April 22nd, work has been restarted and with full force we continu the further completion of the project. On the agenda we have got left :

  • resuming and finishing of the installation of the glass wind screens
  • glass installation of the large façade (steel structure currently being erected by others)
  • installation of 300 meters of glass railings around the platforms
  • glass installation of the staircase walls
  • engineering and installation of the glass elevator shaft cladding
  • engineering and installation of the hour schedule panels with glass infill panels
  • engineering and installation of the cases around the drink vending machine with glass cladding

We will surely keep you updated about the further progress of this project.

While we are working on the Mechelen railway station, would you like some more information about the other railway station project already completed, the Ghent railway station project?
