Museum Dossinkazerne Mechelen

75 year anniversary of the Holocaust

The National Holocaust Remembrance is the commemoration of the victims of the Holocaust organized by the Dutch Auschwitz Committee the last Sunday of January. The ceremony coincides with the commemoration of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp on 27 January 1945. This year it was the 75-year commemoration. The renewed Dossink barracks memorial focuses on life in the barracks.

Dossinkazerne leaves no one untouched

During the Second World War, from 1942 till 1944, the German occupier deployed the Kazerne Dossin in Mechelen as a collection camp for Belgian Jews and Gypsies. About 25,500 Jews and 354 Gypsies were deported from this camp, most of them to Auschwitz-Birkenau. Less than five percent returned alive. Today, the Dossinkazerne site has been expanded as a Memorial, Museum and Documentation Center on the Holocaust and Human Rights. There is currently a memorial exhibition untill the 26th of June 2020.

Worth a double visit

The museum is definitely worth a double visit. On the one hand, this museum reminds us in a haunting way of the horrors of the Second World War. On the other hand, you will discover for yourself how Starconstruct has contributed to the sleek and timeless architecture of this memorable museum, installing glass staircases and translucent glass ceilings.
